WATCH: Flash parade for Skippers’ 70th Anniversary

The year was 1951. Truman was president. The Korean War was raging. Black and white were the only colors on television screens; spacecraft and computers were found only in science fiction stories. And Lawton Skipper and Elmina Lindsey were pronounced husband and wife.

On Tuesday, March 30, several members of the High Springs and Lake City congregations gathered at the High Springs church parking lot, forming a surprise parade to honor the Skippers on their 70th wedding anniversary. A long line of vehicles decorated with balloons and posters – and one with tin cans on a string tied to the back bumper – proceeded to drive past the Skippers’ home. Family members escorted the couple out to the roadside, where they became the guests of honor as well-wishers honked their horns, waved, and shouted congratulations as they drove past.
